What is it used for?
METFORMIN is used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. It helps to control the blood sugar level. Treatment should be combined with a diet and exercise. This medicine can be used alone or in combination with the other anti-diabetes medicine.
What should I discuss with my physician prior to taking this medicine?
Please do tell your physician if you have any of the following conditions:
- anemia
- frequently drink alcohol-containing beverages
- become easily dehydrated
- heart attack
- heart failure that is treated with medications
- kidney disease
- liver disease
- polycystic ovary syndrome
- serious infection or injury
- vomiting
- an unusual or allergic reaction to metformin, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
- pregnant or trying to get pregnant
- breast-feeding
How is this medicine should be taken?
Take this medicine orally during a meal. Tablets should be swallowed accompanied with a drink of water. This medicine is to be taken at regular intervals. You should never take this medicine more often than prescribed.
Consult with your pediatrician regarding the possibility of the use of this medicine by children. Although this drug may be prescribed for children as young as 10 years old for selected conditions, certain precautions should be applied.
Overdosage: If you suspect an overdosage, get in touch with the nearest poison control center or emergency room immediately.
NOTE: This medicine is only intended for your use. You should never share it with others.
What to do if I missed a dose?
If you missed a dose, it should be taken as soon as possible. If the time has almost come for the next dose, only that one should be taken. You should never take double or extra doses; a single doze is sufficient for the purposes.
What are the possible interactions with the other medicine/food/etc?
This medicine should never be taken with any of the following drugs:
- dofetilide
- gatifloxacin
- certain contrast medicines given before X-rays, CT scans, MRI, or other procedures
It may also trigger possible interactions with the following:
- digoxin
- diuretics
- female hormones, like estrogens or progestins and birth control pills
- isoniazid
- medicines for blood pressure, heart disease, irregular heart beat
- morphine
- nicotinic acid
- phenothiazines like chlorpromazine, mesoridazine, prochlorperazine, thioridazine
- phenytoin
- procainamide
- quinidine
- quinine
- ranitidine
- steroid medicines like prednisone or cortisone
- stimulant medicines for attention disorders, weight loss, or to stay awake
- thyroid medicines
- trimethoprim
- vancomycin
This list is not all-inclusive. Provide your health care provider with a list of all the medicines, herbs, non-prescription drugs, or dietary supplements you use. Also tell them whether you smoke, drink alcohol, or use illegal drugs. Some of those items may also interact with your medicine.
Is there anything I should pay attention to while taking it?
Pay regular visits to your doctor or health care professional to undergo checks on your progress.
You should learn how to check your blood sugar yourself. You should also learn the symptoms of low and high level of blood sugar and know how to manage them.
If you have a low blood sugar, it is necessary to eat or drink something that contains sugar. You should ensure that your family, friends and colleagues know how to call for medical help promptly in case if you have serious symptoms of low blood sugar, including losing consciousness or having a seizure.
If you need a surgery or require a procedure which includes usage of the contrast drugs, inform your physician of the fact that you are taking this drug.
You should wear a medical identification bracelet or chain at all times, which will tell people that you have diabetes, and also carry a card listing all your prescribed medications.
Does this medicine have any possible side effects?
The following side effects should be reported to your doctor or health care professional as soon as they are noted:
- allergic reactions like skin rashes, itching or hives,face, lips, or tongue swelling
- issues with breathing
- feeling faint or lightheaded, falls
- low blood sugar (ask your doctor or health care professional for a list of these symptoms)
- muscle aches or pains
- slow or irregular heartbeat
- unusual stomach pain or discomfort
- unusually tired or weak
The below side effects usually do not necessarily require any medical attention (please do report them to your physician if they are recurrent or bothersome):
- diarrhea
- headache
- heartburn
- metallic taste in mouth
- nausea
- stomach gas, upset
Other side effects are also possible, the above list is not all inclusive.
Where should I keep my medicine?
Keep this medicine out of the children’s reach.
This medicine should be stored at the room temperatures between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). It should be protected from the light and moisture. Dispose of any unused medicine after the expiry date is reached.
