What is it used for?
CELECOXIB is widely known as a COX-2 inhibitor, a drug belonging to the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) class. It is used for reducing swelling and pain treatment. This drug is often used for various types of joint and muscular conditions, such as arthritis. It is also possible to use it to treat bone pain, dental pain, headaches, or painful monthly periods. It can also be used to reduce the number of colon or rectal polyps in certain situations.
What should I discuss with my physician prior to taking this medicine?
Please do tell your physician if you have any of the following conditions:
- asthma
- coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery within the past 2 weeks
- drink more than 3 alcohol-containing drinks a day
- heart disease or circulation problems like heart failure or leg edema (fluid retention)
- high blood pressure
- kidney disease
- liver disease
- stomach bleeding or ulcers
- an unusual or allergic reaction to celecoxib, sulfa drugs, aspirin, other NSAIDs, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
- pregnant or trying to get pregnant
- breast-feeding
How is this medicine should be taken?
This medicine should be taken orally accompanied with a full glass of water. It should be taken during a meal if it upsets your stomach or if you take 400 mg at one time. You shouldn’t lie down during at least 10 minutes after its usage. The medicine should be taken at the same time each day. You shouldn’t take more of this medicine than you are prescribed. It is possible for long-term, continuous use of it to slightly increase the risk of a heart attack or stroke.
Contact your pediatrician regarding the use of this medicine by children. Special care might be necessary.
Overdosage: If you suspect an overdosage, get in touch with the nearest poison control center or emergency room immediately.
NOTE: This medicine is only intended for your use. You should never share it with the others.
What to do if I missed a dose?
If you missed a dose, it should be taken as soon as possible. If the time has almost come for the next dose, only that one should be taken. You should never take double or extra doses; a single doze is sufficient for the purposes.
What are the possible interactions with the other medicine/food/etc?
This medicine should never be taken with any of the following drugs:
- cidofovir
- methotrexate
- other NSAIDs, medicines for pain and inflammation, like ibuprofen or naproxen
- pemetrexed
It may also trigger possible interactions with the following:
- alcohol
- aspirin and aspirin-like drugs
- diuretics
- fluconazole
- lithium
- medicines for high blood pressure
- steroid medicines like prednisone or cortisone
- warfarin
This list is not all-inclusive. Provide your health care provider with a list of all the medicines, herbs, non-prescription drugs, or dietary supplements that you are using. Also tell them whether you smoke, drink alcohol, or use illegal drugs. Some of those items may also interact with your medicine.
Is there anything I should pay attention to while taking it?
Let your doctor or health care professional know if the symptoms do not improve. Always consult with your doctor prior to taking another painkiller. Self-treatment can be dangerous.
This medicine can not prevent heart attacks or strokes. In fact, it might even increase their chances. They might increase during long treatment courses with this medicine, especially for people who have heart disease. If you are taking aspirin to prevent a heart attack or a stroke, consult with your physician for further guidance.
You shouldn’t take ibuprofen and naproxen medicines during the treatment course with this drug. If you did, side effects including upset stomach, nausea, or ulcers might occur. A number of non-prescription medicines should not be taken with this drug to prevent possible interference.
This drug can cause ulcers, stomach bleeding and intestines during any stage of the treatment course. It is possible for ulcers and bleeding to occur without any warning symptoms and even cause death if the patient is not monitored closely.
Does this medicine have any possible side effects?
The following side effects should be reported to your doctor or health care professional as soon as they are noticed:
- allergic reactions like skin rashes, itching or hives,face, lips, or tongue swelling
- black or bloody stools, blood in the urine or vomit
- blurred vision
- issues with breathing
- chest pain
- nausea, vomiting
- problems with balance, talking, walking
- redness, blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin, including inside the mouth
- unexplained weight gain or swelling
- unusually weak or tired
- yellowing of eyes, skin
The below side effects usually do not necessarily require any medical attention (please do report them to your physician if they are recurrent or bothersome):
- constipation or diarrhea
- dizziness
- gas or heartburn
- upset stomach
Other side effects are also possible, the above list is not all inclusive.
Where should I keep my medicine?
Keep this medicine out of the children’s reach.
This medicine should be stored at the room temperatures between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). Keep container tightly closed. Dispose of any unused medicine after the expiry date is reached.
